What is surface rust?
Surface rust is corrosion on the outer layer of metal without major loss of thickness. It is common on some exposed underbody components, especially after winter driving.
What is scaling or deep corrosion?
Layered, flaking rust can indicate meaningful metal loss. Probing and proper inspection may be needed to assess how much sound metal remains.
What counts as structural rust?
Corrosion affecting frame rails, subframes, suspension mounting points, rocker structures or other load-bearing areas can compromise vehicle safety.
Why undercoating is not a structural repair
A coating may hide the appearance of rust but cannot restore lost strength. Structural damage requires an appropriate repair decision, which may include replacement or determining the vehicle is not economical to fix.
What about rust around exhaust mounts?
Rusted hangers and mounting brackets can leave the exhaust unsupported. Those issues should be inspected separately from structural frame corrosion.
When to seek an assessment
If metal has holes, parts are loose or mounting points look weak, arrange a professional inspection before relying on the vehicle.
