Loose heat shields
Thin shields around hot exhaust parts can rust at their mounting points and buzz at certain engine speeds. They should be checked for secure attachment and proper heat protection.
Broken exhaust hangers
Rubber mounts and welded hangers hold the exhaust in position. If one fails, a pipe may strike the body or suspension.
Loose material inside a muffler
Internal baffles can break down over time, producing a rattle inside the muffler. In that case replacing the muffler may be necessary.
Worn joints and clamps
A loose connection may rattle or leak. Rusted hardware can make even a small repair more involved.
How to describe the noise
Tell Tim whether it happens at idle, on bumps, during acceleration or only when cold. These details can narrow down the cause.
When a rattle is urgent
If anything is dragging, hanging dangerously low or touching another critical component, avoid driving until it is checked.
